Ann Lupton Thompson

 

The Society of Friends (Quakers) began in England in the 1650s, when they broke away from the Puritans. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, as a safe place for Friends to live and practice their faith.



Ann Lupton was born on May 16, 1733 in Solbury, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Her parents were Joseph Lupton and Mary Scarborough.

Ann moved to Frederick County, Virginia with her family about 1740.

In 1750, Ann signed her brother, Joseph's, marriage certificate at Hopewell Monthly Meeting in Frederick County, Virginia.

She married Joseph Thompson in 1773. Joseph was born on March 10, 1728 in Virginia.

Joseph Thompson, of Barkley County in the Colony of Virginia, and Ann Lupton, dau of Joseph and Mary Lupton, deceased; 15th day of 7th month, 1773; at Hopewell.

Her friends and relatives signed their marriage certificate.

The family moved to Newberry, South Carolina with other Frederick County, Virginia Quakers. They were admitted to the Bush River Monthly Meeting in 1776.

In 1779, Joseph Thompson and Robert Evans were sent by the Bush River Meeting to ascertain the sincerity of John Coats' apology.

Ann died in 1806 in Newberry.

 

Frederick County, Virginia was formed in 1743 from Orange County. Old Frederick County included all or part of four counties in present-day Virginia: Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, and Frederick, as well as five in present-day West Virginia: Hardy, Hampshire, Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan.
